Senior Backend Engineer

As a Senior Backend Engineer at M-KOPA, you will be responsible for developing advanced event-driven microservices that have a tangible impact. The engineering teams operate with full ownership, overseeing solutions from initial architectural decisions through to production monitoring. The role emphasizes combining modern .NET development practices with a commitment to engineering that supports digital and financial inclusion throughout Africa. The technical environment utilizes C#/.NET, Azure cloud services (with experience in AWS or GCP also valued), event-driven microservice architectures using Service Bus (or similar messaging technologies like Kafka/RabbitMQ), Kubernetes and Docker for infrastructure, and Prometheus/Grafana for observability. The engineering culture promotes DevOps, infrastructure as code, automated testing across all environments including production, and continuous delivery, with AI coding tools like Claude Code integrated into the workflow.

2. Own solutions end-to-end, from architecture decisions to production monitoring.
3. Coach and contribute as a senior team member, emphasizing high quality output.
4. Ensure observability and monitoring are integrated into solutions.
5. Implement automated testing in all environments, including production.
6. Practice infrastructure as code and DevOps principles.

1. Comfortable working in a team that owns the entire software stack, including supporting infrastructure, throughout the software lifecycle under a DevOps culture.
2. Values the constraints of continuous delivery on engineering processes.
3. Embraces testing and observability as primary concerns in development.
4. Strong grasp of C# .NET development.
5. Experience with event-driven systems (Service Bus or similar messaging technologies like Kafka or RabbitMQ).
6. Microservices architecture experience.
7. Experience with Azure, or other major cloud providers such as AWS or GCP.
8. Familiarity with containerization and orchestration tools (Kubernetes, Docker).
9. Experience with observability tools such as Prometheus and Grafana.
10. Expertise in testing and deployment.
11. Possesses a DevOps culture mindset.
12. Experience working with AI coding tools, ideally Claude Code or similar.
13. Diploma qualification.
14. 3 years of experience.
