About the Company

Vert is a Kenya-based, indigenous company specializing in the growth and export of fresh produce to the European market. The company aims to be Kenya's leading horticultural exporter with international brand recognition, supplying an extensive and diverse customer base.

Job Description

The Technical Assistant will be instrumental in supporting Vert's field operations by serving as the main point of contact for out-growers. Key responsibilities include facilitating the transfer of essential agricultural knowledge, ensuring strict adherence to quality and safety standards across all farming activities, and actively working to optimize productivity throughout the entire supply chain, from initial cultivation in the field through to processing at the factory.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Recruit and provide comprehensive training to out-growers on best agronomic practices, Integrated Crop & Pest Management (ICPM), and strict quality standards.
  2. Organize and lead farmer meetings, workshops, and field demonstrations to introduce new techniques and enhance productivity.
  3. Train farm workers on all production activities, including farm hygiene, crop husbandry, crop protection, harvesting, and export specifications.
  4. Assist in the planning and implementation of planting, weeding, spraying, and harvesting schedules.
  5. Monitor crop performance, conduct regular pest and disease surveillance, and assess soil health.
  6. Ensure strict compliance with safety and environmental regulations on all partner farms.
  7. Oversee the calibration of spray equipment and supervise all spray operations to ensure efficacy and safety.
  8. Manage "Block Release" for harvesting, verifying that all Pre-Harvest Intervals (PHIs) have been observed before crops are sent to the factory.
  9. Take sole responsibility for maintaining accurate and up-to-date farmer field records.
  10. Track crop progress, prepare harvest projections, and compare them against actual yields.
  11. Prepare detailed weekly reports on production status, challenges encountered, and actionable recommendations.
  12. Facilitate smooth and clear communication between the farmer base and factory operations to align supply with demand.
  13. Assist and support external audits to ensure continuous compliance with international standards, including FSSC 22000, HACCP, GLOBALGAP and other relevant regulatory standards.

Requirements

  1. Hold a Diploma in Agriculture, Crop Science, Agronomy, or a related field.
  2. Possess a minimum of 3 years of experience in a similar advisory or field assistant role within the agricultural sector.
  3. Demonstrate strong knowledge of crop production cycles, ICPM, and food safety standards (e.g., HACCP, GLOBALGAP).
  4. Be able to ride a motorcycle and possess a valid Driver's License.
  5. Exhibit excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with farmers and workers.
  6. Possess practical problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound decisions in the field.
  7. Be proficient in data collection, record-keeping, and report writing.
  8. Have a strong understanding of spray equipment, calibration, and chemical safety protocols.
  9. Be capable of working independently in remote field locations and managing time effectively.
  10. Show a proactive attitude towards training and capacity building.
