Job Description
AAA Growers – Veg, a division of AAA Group, specializes in producing premium vegetables, herbs, chilies, and fruits. This role focuses specifically on avocado production at Simba Farm. The company began growing herbs in 2010 and has since expanded its operations across three farms, utilizing both in-house and open-field cultivation to ensure a consistent supply of high-quality produce throughout the year.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor plant health, identifying signs of stress, disease, or pests.
- Implement plant nutrition and pest control strategies as directed by senior management.
- Manage and maintain irrigation systems, spraying equipment, and field tools.
- Ensure quality control and proper handling of harvested fruits.
- Provide training on new techniques such as propping, pruning, harvesting, weeding, mulching, and field drainage.
- Develop an avocado crop model to track phenological growth stages throughout the season.
- Maintain a uniform stand of trees by adhering to a robust avocado gap-filling/infilling program.
- Source avocado scions for grafting from reputable suppliers.
- Plan and forecast avocado seedling grafting and delivery based on seasonal demands.
- Ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of all labor in the section, meeting daily task recommendations.
- Train staff in organic farming, grafting, pruning, crop management, and other necessary practices.
- Oversee daily orchard operations including nursery management, transplanting, irrigation, fertilizer application, pest management, and harvesting.
- Support the agronomy team in effective pest control, keeping pests and diseases below threshold levels.
- Monitor and schedule irrigation based on crop requirements and production stages.
- Ensure orchard operations comply with all agricultural audit guidelines.
- Address and resolve any deviations from established standards.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Agriculture, Horticulture, Agronomy, Crop Science, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of hands-on experience in orchard or plantation management, preferably with avocado or fruit crops.
- Demonstrated experience in crop husbandry practices including pruning, grafting, irrigation management, and pest/disease control.
- Experience managing farm labor teams, ensuring productivity, compliance, and safety.
- Strong understanding of avocado crop growth stages, phenological monitoring, and seasonal planning.
- Proficiency in irrigation scheduling, fertilizer application, and pest and disease management.
- Ability to manage inventory, tools, and field equipment, ensuring proper utilization and maintenance.
- Solid knowledge of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), Global GAP, and other agricultural audit standards.
- Excellent people management skills, including staff supervision, training, and performance monitoring.
- Possess a hands-on, proactive, and results-oriented approach to orchard management.
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities, with a passion for continuous learning and improvement.
- Deep agricultural knowledge of avocado crop husbandry and seasons in East Africa.
- In-depth understanding of avocado husbandry practices.
