Job Description

The primary objective of this position is to guarantee that SBM Bank operates in full compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and industry best practices related to Customer Due Diligence (CDD) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML). This includes strict adherence to legislation such as the Proceeds of Crime and Anti-Money Laundering Act 2009, its subsequent amendments, and the CBK Prudential guideline /PG/08 concerning the prevention of proceeds of crime and money laundering, and combating the financing of terrorism.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Conduct Customer Due Diligence (CDD) in line with legal requirements, prudential guidelines, and the Bank’s KYC/AML Policy.
  2. Review customer KYC/AML documentation to ensure completeness, consistency, and adherence to standards.
  3. Maintain accurate and adequate customer KYC/AML records for all bank customers as mandated by law.
  4. Prepare and keep up-to-date case management reports for all reviewed KYC/AML files.
  5. Screen all new clients against known sanction lists, internal blacklists, and Politically Exposed Persons (PEP) databases during onboarding.
  6. Perform customer risk profiling according to the Bank’s KYC/AML policy.
  7. Conduct regular risk assessments for money laundering and terrorism financing.
  8. Assist in updating and maintaining internal blacklists used for customer screening.
  9. Execute Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) for customers identified as High Risk based on the Bank’s risk calculator.
  10. Fulfill other duties as assigned by the Senior Manager or Chief Compliance Officer.
  11. Monitor transactions and report large cash transactions (CTRs) and suspicious transactions (STRs) to the Financial Reporting Center (FRC).
  12. Regularly review and analyze customer transaction reports to identify split cash transactions, large cash transactions, or suspicious activities for FRC reporting.
  13. Follow up on alerts generated by the AML monitoring tool and document all actions taken to resolve issues.
  14. Prepare and maintain registers for all identified split transactions, large cash transactions, and suspicious transactions.
  15. Request additional supporting documentation or explanations for transactions flagged as suspicious by the automated monitoring system.
  16. Participate in the development, implementation, and enforcement of the Bank’s Know Your Customer (KYC)/Anti-Money Laundering (AML) compliance program.
  17. Contribute to the development and enhancement of the Bank’s KYC/AML Risk Calculator.
  18. Monitor and ensure adherence to agreed Turnaround Times (TATs) and Service Level Agreements (SLAs) with other bank departments.
  19. Assist management in fostering a culture of compliance with KYC/AML laws, regulations, and policies through induction and regular training sessions.
  20. Develop, implement, and maintain a framework for conducting KYC/Due Diligence and enforcing the Bank’s AML compliance program.
  21. Actively participate in industry forums and workshops to stay informed about new developments, best practices, and changes in KYC/AML laws and regulations.
  22. Coordinate and respond to inquiries or requests for information regarding the Bank’s KYC/AML programs from regulators, correspondent banks, and other stakeholders.
  23. Prepare and submit weekly activity reports.
  24. Prepare and maintain an up-to-date register of customer risk profiles.
  25. Update and maintain a register of all clients classified as Politically Exposed Persons (PEPs).
  26. Prepare and submit all statutory and regulatory reports related to KYC/AML as required by the regulator.
  27. Prepare and maintain current KYC/AML compliance risk assessment reports as directed by the Chief Compliance Officer.
  28. Assist in preparing reports for Management and the Board, providing updates on the status of compliance with KYC/AML laws, regulations, and policies.

Requirements

  1. A minimum of 3 years of experience in a banking environment, specifically in a similar compliance role or with experience in branch operations.
  2. Proficiency with AML software systems, database tools, and Microsoft Excel.
  3. Hold a Bachelor’s Degree.
  4. Professional certification such as ACAMS or ICA is considered an added advantage.
  5. Excellent communication, writing, and reporting skills.
  6. Strong analytical abilities.
  7. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team player.
  8. Capacity for creating and innovating solutions.
  9. Proven track record of delivering results and exceeding customer expectations.
  10. Strong planning and organizing skills.
  11. Eagerness for learning and conducting research.
  12. High level of attention to detail.
