Backend Developer

Savannah Informatics is a Kenyan e-Health software company founded by clinicians and finance specialists to deliver interoperable, connected solutions for healthcare facilities, organizations, and regions. This role requires a strong foundation in backend technologies, advanced problem-solving skills, and a deep understanding of system architecture to ensure reliability, performance, and security. 1. Develop efficient and scalable backend code, adhering to coding standards, to meet business needs
2. Design and implement scalable, maintainable, and high-performance backend systems tailored to business and user needs.
3. Enhance existing backend code for optimal performance and maintainability through refactoring and optimization
4. Collaborate with front-end developers to develop and maintain APIs (GraphQL and REST) to seamlessly integrate front-end systems with backend logic
5. Partner with product managers, system architects, and other stakeholders to translate user requirements into robust technical solutions.
6. Analyze backend system performance and identify opportunities for improvement based on user and system metrics.
7. Develop and maintain unit tests, integration tests, and automated testing suites to ensure the reliability and stability of the backend codebase
8. Expand software functionality by implementing new features while considering user feedback and compatibility
9. Evaluate and prioritize feature requests based on feasibility, impact, and alignment with the software's direction
10. Translate user requirements into effective technical solutions, collaborating with cross-functional teams
11. Contribute to the development of clear and comprehensive technical documentation that outlines the architecture, functionality, and usage of backend components
12. Implement best practices in security, including user authentication, authorization, and data protection.
13. Ensure backend systems comply with relevant standards and regulations in the healthcare sector.
14. Continuous learning, sharing knowledge, and staying updated with backend development trends and technologies

1. Advanced understanding of principles in system design to create scalable, reliable and maintainable backend solutions.
2. Proficient in Golang and/or Python, with experience in other backend languages being an advantage.
3. Strong understanding of API design principles, including experience with GraphQL and REST.
4. Familiarity with Object Relational Mappers (ORMs) and the ability to design and manage relational database schemas effectively.
5. Knowledge of event-driven programming and asynchronous processing.
6. Ability to integrate backend systems with other components and external services.
7. In-depth understanding of server-side templating languages
8. In-depth understanding of security & compliance best practices
9. Knowledge of user authentication and authorization between multiple systems, servers, and environments
10. Experience with writing unit tests, integration tests, and end-to-end tests to ensure code quality and reliability.
11. Proficient understanding of version control tools, enabling effective collaboration and code management.
12. Bachelor's degree in a science-related field or relevant experience.
13. Proven solid knowledge and experience in programming applications, programming language and technical terminology.
14. Proficient in database query languages.
15. Knowledge of operating systems for development, special emphasis on Mac OS, and Linux
16. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
17. The ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a team.
18. Excellent communication skills to articulate technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.
19. Demonstrated curiosity and commitment to continuous learning in a rapidly evolving tech landscape.
