About the Company

Katiba Institute (KI) is a research and litigation institute established in 2011 to support implementation of Kenya’s 2010 Constitution, uphold constitutionalism, and advance human rights and democratic governance.

Job Description

The role involves overseeing the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) Department, managing litigation strategy, supervising advocates and legal staff, conducting legal research, supporting constitutional litigation, and strengthening partnerships with communities and organizations.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Strategic Litigation Leadership
  2. Manage and coordinate activities of KI’s Public Interest Litigation Department
  3. Design and implement litigation strategies to advance constitutional and human rights issues
  4. Supervise advocates, monitor cases, and guide legal interventions
  5. Draft and review pleadings, legal submissions, and litigation documents
  6. Develop litigation strategies involving advocacy, research, and policy efforts
  7. Represent the organization in courts, tribunals, and related forums
  8. Planning, Coordination & Supervision
  9. Prepare annual work plans and budgets for the department
  10. Monitor implementation of departmental plans and compliance
  11. Supervise staff and performance reviews
  12. Submit departmental reports to the Executive Director and Board
  13. Advocacy & Policy Integration
  14. Conduct legal research and provide advisory support
  15. Support public legal education and strategic advocacy initiatives
  16. Build partnerships with communities, civil society, and legal actors
  17. Operational Oversight
  18. Support communications related to litigation work
  19. Ensure implementation of organizational policies and audit recommendations
  20. Manage opportunities under the Executive Director’s guidance

Requirements

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Law, Diploma in Law from Kenya School of Law, and current practicing certificate
  2. Master’s degree in law and advocacy/human rights is an advantage
  3. At least 9 years of litigation experience, preferably in public interest or human rights law
  4. Strong knowledge of constitutional, administrative, and international human rights law
  5. Proven case load management and supervision of staff
  6. Strong legal research and drafting skills
  7. Experience in strategic/public interest litigation
  8. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  9. Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities
  10. Regional/international experience is an added advantage
