Job Description

The Medical Officer for Critical Care at Avenue Healthcare is responsible for providing excellent patient care and services within the Critical Care unit. This involves ensuring compliance with established clinical standards, contributing to the unit's growth and prudent financial management, and maintaining high client satisfaction. The role requires adherence to Avenue Healthcare's defined policies, protocols, procedures, and standards.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Assess, stabilize, diagnose, and manage critically ill patients, ensuring thorough and accurate documentation of patient history, physical examinations, investigations, and treatment plans.
  2. Implement and maintain appropriate management and treatment protocols for patients in the Critical Care unit, aligning with hospital policies and clinical guidelines.
  3. Facilitate timely consultations and referrals to specialists when necessary.
  4. Provide daily updates on patient progress to patients and their next of kin, and manage patient admissions, consent processes, and discharges.
  5. Perform clinical procedures as per training and conduct regular ward rounds and patient reviews.
  6. Promote evidence-based practice and continuous skill development by organizing and supporting CMEs and research activities.
  7. Actively participate in clinical quality initiatives, including morbidity and mortality meetings, incident reporting, root cause analyses (RCAs), and Quality Improvement Plans (QIPs).
  8. Review medical reports and provide patient updates to insurance companies, and attend daily, weekly, and monthly staff meetings as required.
  9. Rotate across various departments when needed and foster a positive, team-oriented work environment.
  10. Uphold patient privacy and confidentiality, and ensure patient satisfaction through quality care, effective communication, and feedback mechanisms, including using standardized tools and demonstrating follow-up.
  11. Support the facility's financial health and expansion by enhancing service quality and diversity, and assisting with marketing efforts to increase client numbers.
  12. Achieve financial targets by managing costs within budget, ensuring accurate and timely billing for drugs and services, enforcing exclusions, seeking pre-authorizations, and ensuring proper documentation and prompt invoice delivery.
  13. Adhere to Avenue Healthcare's corporate governance policies, including preventing, detecting, and reporting fraud or criminal activity, and implementing audit recommendations.
  14. Maintain comprehensive knowledge of and comply with all Avenue Healthcare policies, procedures, and systems as outlined in the HRMIS.
  15. Perform any other duties assigned by the immediate supervisor that align with the job description.

Requirements

  1. Hold a medical degree (MBChB) from a recognized institution.
  2. Possess a valid Kenya Medical Practitioners’ and Dentists’ Council (KMPDC) license.
  3. Have an updated BLS and ACLS/ATLS certificate.
  4. Postgraduate training in Critical Care is preferred.
  5. Have at least 2 years of post-internship experience, with a desirable minimum of 1 year in inpatient practice.
  6. Demonstrate a strong customer focus and results-oriented approach.
  7. Possess excellent interpersonal skills, strong team-playing abilities, and effective communication skills.
  8. Be reliable, ethical, emotionally intelligent, and pay strong attention to detail.
