Operator – Coater

Mabati Rolling Mills Limited (MRM), established in 1962 and a member of the Safal Group, is a manufacturing company based in Nairobi, Kenya, specializing in rolling mill products.

Mabati Rolling Mills (MRM) is looking for an experienced Coater Operator to manage the Colour Coating Line's Coater section. The successful candidate will be crucial in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of this section, strictly following company guidelines. Key aspects of the role include setting up and continuously monitoring the coating processes, ensuring the highest quality of materials, actively working to reduce operational downtime, and consistently maintaining excellent safety and housekeeping practices within the work area.

1. Inspect pick-up and applicator rolls to prevent defects in painted coils.
2. Examine incoming coils to avoid damage to applicator rolls.
3. Clean chemical and paint coaters regularly.
4. Identify and select the correct paint type based on operational needs or supervisor requests.
5. Check paint properties and collaborate with Quality Inspectors for necessary adjustments.
6. Ensure chemical and paint solutions are ready promptly after stoppages and during program changes.
7. Verify sufficient paint levels in the tray and proper paint recirculation.
8. Remove empty paint drums and dispose of used cotton rags and thinner according to established procedures.
9. Prepare chemical and paint coaters for operation.
10. Ensure paint application meets operational parameters for Wet Film Thickness (WFT) and Dry Film Thickness (DFT).
11. Coordinate with the Quality Inspector for results and roll adjustments.
12. Monitor coating progress and correct any identified defects.
13. Operate the control desk in the coater room as per procedure.
14. Input process parameters into the SCADA system as required.
15. Report all faults related to the Coaters section or any other part of the line.
16. Ensure materials are pre-treated using the recommended procedure before paint application.
17. Maintain high standards of housekeeping in the coaters section.
18. Record operation parameters in the coater room logbook.
19. Participate in strip breakage recovery efforts.
20. Assist in line start-up and shut-down activities.
21. Train in Entry and Exit sections for multi-skilling purposes.
22. Perform additional duties as assigned by the CCL Production Supervisor.
23. Adhere to health and safety guidelines, safe work practices, and good housekeeping, including wearing provided PPE.
24. Observe the CO2 fire suppression system keenly and respond according to the emergency plan.

1. Must possess a KCSE Certificate.
2. Hold a Government Grade Test II or Craft Certificate in mechanical, electrical, or have exposure to paint processes.
3. A minimum of 3 years of experience operating industrial process or production equipment in a manufacturing or heavy industrial setting.
4. At least 1 year of experience operating industrial fluid-handling systems such as oil circulation, filtration, cooling, lubrication, or hydraulic systems.
5. No medical conditions that would interfere with the role, such as paint allergies.
6. Demonstrate strong safety consciousness.
7. Possess the ability to learn new tasks quickly.
8. Be a collaborative team player.
9. Exhibit flexibility and willingness to follow instructions.
10. Capable of communicating effectively and appropriately.
