Job Description

The Database Administrator Manager (DBA) at HFCB Kenya Limited is tasked with overseeing the entire lifecycle of the organization's database systems. This includes designing, deploying, and managing the database, backup, and storage infrastructure. The role ensures secure access and high availability of data, aligning with business needs and technological advancements. The DBA also plays a crucial role in evaluating, planning, and implementing IT and telecommunication systems, managing service providers, and developing business continuity and data security plans to guarantee continuous service.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Design and document operational manuals and procedures.
  2. Undertake the day-to-day management of the Bank’s database platforms.
  3. Ensure that all assigned bank information technology platforms keep pace with technological innovations and developments.
  4. Manage relationships with all technology-based service providers to optimize uptimes.
  5. Evaluate, plan, implement, and maintain the Bank’s information technology and telecommunication systems and projects within agreed time and budget constraints.
  6. Develop and manage a Business Continuity Plan and Data Security Plan for appropriate systems to guarantee continuation of services.
  7. Increase computer awareness and literacy among staff to enhance skills and productivity.
  8. Ensure appropriate controls and monitoring mechanisms for IT operations and services despite power outages and telecommunication failures.
  9. Monitor and manage service user complaints to maintain the highest standards of service.
  10. Organize, manage, and motivate staff members and partners when assigned to projects or incidents, establishing suitable structures and implementing development programs.
  11. Ensure appropriate Management Information Systems (MIS) are produced for IT and the bank’s management.
  12. Take a proactive role in influencing policy and the strategic direction of the Bank as a member of various systems-related committees and projects.

Requirements

  1. University Degree in a technology-related field (Upper second or equivalent).
  2. Database Management Certification in Oracle is mandatory.
  3. Proficiency in project management or ITIL.
  4. Minimum of 7 years’ experience in supporting IT systems in general, with 4 years of experience in Database Administration and OCP certification.
  5. 2 years’ experience in Sybase, MySQL, MS-SQL, Azure Cloud, PostgreSQL, with proven experience in installing, setup, support, and troubleshooting modern databases in a high availability environment.
  6. 2 years’ experience working in UNIX and Windows environments.
  7. 2 years’ experience in Banking Operations, Storage and Backup management, Data Warehousing, and ETL concepts.
  8. Thorough experience in formal Software Lifecycle methodology, design, and administration of Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMSs).
  9. Experience in Sybase (or SAP Hanna) will be an added advantage.
  10. Ability to take a structured and effective approach to work and demonstrate leadership potential.
  11. Capability to analyze, diagnose, plan, execute, and evaluate work to time, cost, and quality targets, exhibiting familiarity with available tools, standards, and procedures.
  12. Effective communication skills, able to guide and advise clients and business partners.
  13. Astute at planning for mission-critical production activities.
  14. Proficiency with Oracle and Microsoft database technology stack.
  15. Good understanding of SOA-centric concepts and technologies, authentication, and data security.
  16. Self-empowerment to enable development of open communication, teamwork, and trust.
  17. Knowledge and experience with ITIL as a best practice framework for Systems Development.
