Senior Journalist

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is a public service broadcaster headquartered in London, United Kingdom.

This position requires strong journalistic judgment, creative storytelling, and digital ambition. The successful candidate will be responsible for commissioning, creating, and delivering distinctive journalism that serves audiences with accuracy, impartiality, and innovation across multiple platforms.

1. Contribute to BBC Amharic’s transition to a digital-first, video-led service by fostering a culture of editorial excellence, innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning.
2. Produce, edit, commission, and publish high-quality journalism across digital, video, social, audio, and radio platforms, ensuring content meets audience needs and platform behaviors.
3. Support the delivery of major news stories, special coverage, investigations, explainers, and original journalism, ensuring timely, engaging, and impactful output.
4. Utilize audience insights, analytics, and performance data to inform content decisions and enhance reach, relevance, and audience engagement.
5. Collaborate closely with colleagues across Horn of Africa services and wider BBC teams to coordinate coverage, share knowledge, and contribute to collaborative storytelling projects.
6. Support the development of digital storytelling, visual journalism, and emerging content formats, particularly those engaging younger and underserved audiences.
7. Apply BBC Editorial Guidelines consistently, ensuring content meets the highest standards of accuracy, impartiality, fairness, and compliance, and contribute to editorial decision-making within defined parameters.

1. Significant experience producing high-quality journalism in a fast-paced, multimedia news environment, with the ability to deliver accurate and engaging content under tight deadlines.
2. Strong editorial judgment and the ability to identify, develop, and tell distinctive stories that resonate with target audiences.
3. Proven experience creating content for digital-first audiences, with a strong understanding of video, social media, and mobile journalism.
4. Ability to use audience insights, analytics, and performance data to inform content decisions and maximize audience reach and engagement.
5. Good knowledge of major digital and social platforms, including YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp, and BBC digital products.
6. Experience editing, producing, and publishing content across a range of formats and platforms.
7. Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with colleagues across teams and services.
8. A sound understanding of BBC Editorial Guidelines and a commitment to accuracy, impartiality, and fairness.
9. Bachelor's Degree.
10. Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
11. Desirable: Experience reporting on Ethiopia and the wider Horn of Africa region.
12. Desirable: Experience in data journalism, investigative reporting, or visual storytelling.
13. Desirable: Experience presenting content on video, audio, or live digital platforms.
14. Desirable: Knowledge of audience growth strategies, SEO, and content optimization techniques.
