This role is specifically for Suyian Conservancy, which is seeking a passionate and dedicated Assistant Conservation Officer to join their team in Laikipia, focusing on wildlife and ecological monitoring, and community conservation initiatives.

Job Description

Suyian Conservancy is seeking a passionate and dedicated Assistant Conservation Officer to join our team in Laikipia. The Assistant Conservation Officer will be involved in wildlife monitoring, ecological monitoring, implementing applied technology in conservation, data collection and management, data curation, camera trap image annotation, and community conservation initiatives in liaison with the Conservation Officer. The role requires a combination of field-based conservation experience and technical skills to support evidence-based conservation management. The position will report to the Conservation Officer.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Support the implementation of Suyian Conservancy’s conservation strategy, wildlife monitoring programs, and ecological monitoring activities.
  2. Support the planning and implementation of wildlife monitoring activities, including camera trapping, wildlife transects surveys, telemetry and tracking of collared species, and other ecological surveys.
  3. Collect and manage ecological data, ensuring accurate and timely data entry and storage.
  4. Support the use and management of conservation technology platforms, including Earth Ranger, ArcGIS Survey 123, Trap Tagger and telemetry equipment.
  5. Support spatial data management, GIS analysis and production of maps and other visualizations for conservation monitoring and management.
  6. Analyze and interpret field and monitoring data and contribute to monthly, quarterly, and annual conservation reports.
  7. Maintain and service the conservancy’s camera trap network, including deployment, retrieval, and monthly routine checks to ensure reliable and continuous data collection.
  8. Support invasive species monitoring and control activities, including field assessment, data collection, mapping, and monitoring of treated areas.
  9. Support monitoring and evaluation by tracking conservation indicators and maintaining accurate monitoring records.
  10. Provide field and logistical support to visiting researchers, conservation partners and other research activities as guided by the Conservation Officer.
  11. Support relevant community conservation and engagement activities where required.
  12. Perform any other relevant duties as may be assigned by the Conservation Officer.

Requirements

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resource Management, Wildlife Management, Conservation Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  2. At least 1-2 years of practical experience in wildlife conservation, ecological monitoring, protected area management, or a related field.
  3. Demonstrated practical experience in wildlife monitoring techniques, including camera trapping, transect surveys, and use of telemetry equipment.
  4. Experience with camera trap management and image annotation is an advantage; a strong willingness and ability to learn is essential.
  5. Experience using GIS software for spatial data management.
  6. Experience with Earth Ranger, Survey123, or other conservation technology platforms, or a strong willingness and ability to learn and use such tools.
  7. Strong computer skills, including proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
  8. Strong report writing, communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills.
  9. Ability to work independently in the field and collaboratively within a team.
  10. Valid driving licence.
