Job Description
This role involves providing comprehensive nursing care to eye patients and offering professional emotional and psychosocial support to them and their families. The successful candidate will support patients through their entire treatment journey, from initial consultation and investigations to pre-operative preparation, surgery, post-operative care, and follow-up.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver comprehensive and safe nursing care to ophthalmic patients.
- Support ophthalmologists during consultations, procedures, and minor surgeries.
- Prepare patients for eye surgery and manage their pre- and post-operative care.
- Monitor patient conditions closely and report any changes or complications to the ophthalmologist.
- Administer prescribed medications and eye drops.
- Educate patients on medication usage, post-operative care, and follow-up schedules.
- Assist with ophthalmic investigations and procedures as per scope of practice.
- Maintain accurate patient and nursing documentation.
- Implement and ensure adherence to infection prevention and control protocols.
- Offer counselling to patients experiencing anxiety, fear, or emotional distress due to their eye condition or treatment.
- Provide support to patients both before and after surgical procedures.
- Assist patients in adapting to visual impairment, vision loss, or changes in their quality of life.
- Offer emotional support to patients and their families after challenging diagnoses or treatment outcomes.
- Identify and refer patients needing specialized psychological or psychiatric intervention.
- Uphold strict confidentiality and professional boundaries.
- Educate patients and caregivers on eye health, treatment compliance, and complication prevention.
- Guide patients on coping with visual impairment and adjusting to vision changes.
- Reinforce information provided by ophthalmologists and other clinical staff.
- Confirm patients understand their treatment plans and follow-up appointments.
Requirements
- Hold a Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited institution.
- Possess a valid registration and practicing license from the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK).
- Have specialized training or a recognized qualification in Ophthalmic Nursing.
- Hold professional training or qualification in Counselling Psychology, Guidance and Counselling, or a related discipline.
- A minimum of 2-3 years of relevant experience, ideally within an eye hospital or ophthalmic environment.
- Experience in counselling patients with visual impairment, chronic eye conditions, or those undergoing eye surgery is an advantage.
- Current BLS/First Aid certification is an advantage.
