Job Description

The Credit Recovery Officer is responsible for engaging customers in arrears to negotiate repayment resolutions, and where amicable settlement fails, protecting the bank’s interests through legal recovery actions. The role aims to improve the Bank’s profitability, loan quality, reduce loan loss provisions, enable provision write-backs, and prepare accurate regulatory and management reports.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Engage delinquent customers to negotiate repayment plans and achieve amicable resolutions.
  2. Develop and execute account-specific recovery strategies to minimize provisions and maximize write-backs.
  3. Coordinate with external parties (lawyers, auctioneers, receivers, investigators, debt collectors) to enforce security and recover outstanding.
  4. Monitor arrears reports, issue statutory and demand notices, and ensure compliance with CBK prudential guidelines.
  5. Escalate matters to Legal where injunctions or complex legal proceedings are required, and track to resolution.
  6. Conduct client visits, repossession oversight, and asset tracing as needed.
  7. Prepare daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports for management, regulatory, and departmental use.
  8. Maintain accurate debtor files with full audit trail of communications and actions.

Requirements

  1. University Degree in Finance, Business, Economics, Law, or related field.
  2. Professional qualification in Banking, Finance, or Accounting (e.g., AKIB, CPA, ACCA).
  3. Certification or formal training in debt recovery or credit management.
  4. Working knowledge of CBK Prudential Guidelines and internal credit policies.
  5. Ability to analyze non-performing exposures and recommend sound recovery actions.
  6. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  7. Strong interpersonal and communication skills for managing customers and stakeholders.
  8. Results-oriented, able to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  9. Exceptional attention to detail.
  10. Ability to think creatively and develop practical recovery solutions.
  11. (Optional) Established working relationships with legal and credit professionals – preferred.
  12. 4 years banking experience, including at least 2 years in credit collections, recoveries, or remedial management.
  13. Proven track record in debt recovery and loan workout strategies.
  14. Experience working with external parties such as lawyers, auctioneers, receivers, investigators, and debt collectors.
  15. Experience in preparing regulatory, management, and departmental reports.
  16. Hands-on experience in issuing statutory and demand notices in compliance with CBK guidelines.
  17. Strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  18. Self-motivated with ability to work independently and within a team.
  19. Strong record-keeping and documentation discipline.
  20. (Preferred) Established working relationships with legal and credit professionals in the banking industry.
